Horse Trekking the East Kimberley, June 13-19

June is one of the best months to go horse riding in the Kimberley. The days are warm and the nights are cool. Join us on a seven day trek through magnificent country. We pick up guests in Kununurra the day before the trek departs and return guests to Kununurra the day after the trek finishes.

The horses are sure-footed and willing. The food is home-cooked and plenty of it. The swags are comfortable. And the landscape is breathtaking.

May 27-28 Overnight Horse Riding at Diggers Rest Station

We would like to run an overnight horse trek on May 27 and 28 from Diggers Rest Station. The trek includes two full days of riding, and accommodation and meals from the evening of May 26 through the morning of May 29. We camp out in swags on the night of May 27.

The last overnight trek was fantastic. The country is still looking good from the wet season, and breezes have picked up during the day.

Join us for a great adventure on sure-footed, willing horses.

Overnight Horse Trek in the Kimberley, April 24-25

Join us for an overnight trek from Digger’s Rest Station down to Duck Hole, and up Cockburn Creek. We will be camping here at the station the night before we depart, and heading out first thing on the morning of April 24. We return to the station Sunday afternoon, April 25. Bed and swag accommodation and meals provided from Friday evening through Monday morning.

Saddles at Diggers Rest

The Australian stock saddle is suited to the long days we spend in the saddle. It is always an adjustment to ride in a saddle other than your own, but the stock saddle is an easy one to get used to. The thigh pads and deep seat hold you in, which can come in handy when riding in the bush.

Although we have used traditional stock saddles for years, I have found the cross breed saddle to be very comfortable as well. A couple of years ago I finally let myself order a custom made saddle from Kent Saddlery. Turns out it was one of the better decisions I’ve made! My saddle has a ’stock horse’ tree and fits all but two of our horses, both of which are very high withered and difficult to fit with saddle anyway. The saddle also fit me perfectly from the get go.

Here’s some information on trekking down south in Victoria, New South Wales, and of course here in the East Kimberley with us (our horse trekking business name for several years was ‘Kimberley Pursuits’).

This catchy article by Julie Miller appeared in the Qantas in-flight magazine a couple of years ago. Helen Packer’s part of the world is also spectacular, and she is an incredible cook (we know because she often spends a month or two with us during the Dry Season, feeding us truly delicious meals).

Kimberley Horse Trekking from Diggers Rest Station

Our 2010 schedule for our horse treks is posted and ready for folks to sign up! Check out the schedule on our horse trekking page.

Our 11 day trek is proving to be very popular, with only one space remaining. The 7 day treks, which are abbreviated versions of the 11 day trek still have plenty of openings.

This season will be an exciting one, exploring some new country from our previous treks. Roderick reckons this is some of the best country in the East Kimberley.
