Digger’s Rest Station was one of the locations used to shoot Baz Luhrmann’s Australia in the Kimberley. Click the image to the right to view the official website of the movie.

The flat top mountains you see in Australia dominate the landscape around Wyndham and Kununurra, and the famous Cockburn Ranges are visible right from our doorstep.

Digger’s Rest Station was home to over 90 of the film’s crew and cast for several weeks last year.  The property was transformed into a whirlwind of cinematic activity.  It was truly an exciting time, with actors and crew coming and going by vehicle and helicopter. Names such as Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, David Gulpilil, and others have been left in signature on the walls of our homestead.

The Australia fansite has a lot of information about the movie. And Baz The Great has a good summary of all the locations used for Australia, including the Kimberley.

There was quite a long article published about the making of Australia in Sydney Morning Herald

… the red, rugged setting of the eastern Kimberley region plays a starring role in the movie. Filming took place at Carlton Hill Station, which is owned by the Packer family’s Consolidated Pastoral Company; Diggers Rest Station, located 30 kilometres from Wyndham; and El Questro Station.

The Tourism Australia Ads

There are two Tourism Australia ads made by Baz Luhrmann to tie in with the launch of Australia that feature the East Kimberley.

Boab was shot a few kilometres from Diggers’ Rest, and you will recognise the Cockburn ranges.

Billabong features the Mitchell Falls, also in the East Kimberley.
