Saddles, Backs and Bums

Ever wonder what sorts of saddles we use? There’s some variety in our saddle shed, but all of our saddles are either traditional Australian stock saddles or cross breed saddles (combination of Australian stock saddle design and western saddle design). The makes include Kent, Syd Hill, Southern Cross and Trevor James.

First and foremost, the saddle you end up in has to fit the horse. Some horses do better with the traditional stock saddles and others do better with the cross breed saddles.  It takes quite a bit of consideration matching horse, saddle, and rider! The shapes of all three, as well as the experience level of the rider and the nature of the horse, come into play in this juggling act. If you are keen to bring your own saddle on one of our horse treks, feel free to mention it to us and we can discuss the possibility.

Regardless of how often you ride, a different saddle can take some getting used to, no matter how comfortable that saddle may be in due time. We have noticed over the years that half chaps and sheepskin bum savers, aka tush cushes, become priceless items on the trail, and many a deal has been made over them:) We have a few spares in the saddle shed, but if you think you may inclined to use them, it’s best to bring your own.
